Written by Mary Manning, Youth’s the Season – ?, is a coming-of-age, tragi-comic satire, depicting occasionally vivacious, often morose, always droll Dublin youths as they wrestle with their ambitions, gender roles, uncertain futures, and themselves.

At its 1931 premiere, Youth’s the Season – ? broke new ground with its startlingly contemporary portrayal of the young Dublin bourgeoisie in the wake of Irish independence. Like Lady Gregory, Mary Manning’s plays were extremely popular with audiences of their time and frequently revived to packed houses in the decade they were first written. 

Only two of Mary Manning’s eight produced plays were ever published. This makes the opportunity to revisit this hidden gem from the Irish theatre canon all the more exciting.
