The Great Hunger – A statement from the Directors of the Abbey Theatre

After close consultation with the Government, with revised capacities and an updated performance schedule, we are pleased to announce that the live performances of The Great Hunger at IMMA are going ahead. The box-office teams of the Abbey Theatre and Dublin Theatre Festival will be in touch with all ticket holders with updates.

Wednesday, 16 September saw tickets selling out for this historic Abbey Theatre production, in partnership with IMMA, within 15 minutes of going on sale. With news of further restrictions later that week, we have spent the days since attempting to find solutions to bring this project to life, safely, for a live audience – exploring a range of scenarios and providing a list of options to the Government for consideration.

This is an uplifting start to an exciting week for The Great Hunger, where rehearsals and the design and technical installations continue onsite at IMMA and opening night on Friday. We want to sincerely thank the brilliant ensemble of 30+ strong artists and the Abbey staff, who have been working so hard on this project, and to express our gratitude to all at IMMA and everybody who bought a ticket.

Please keep in touch and stay safe,

Graham McLaren and Neil Murray
